What is SQL? What is SQL? SQL is the Structured Query Language and is the lingua franca in the world of databases. SQL is an all database vendors and programmers use standard to define, extract and access data stored in databases. SQL started to exist as an IBM but was standardized by ANSI/ISO SQL and the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO) in 1988. The ANSI/ISO SQL standard has evolved since then. Since then, the ANSI-SQL Group has published three standards:
SQL is the language of the query. It is English and user-friendly. While more than 90 SQL words are available, most programmers rarely do more than use a handful of commands: SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, FROM, WHERE, HAVING, BETWEEN. SQL is mainly used by two types of users - programs and people (controls by the client database) - to pass data bases instructions. The SQL commands can be keyed to a database client such as the MySQL Query Browser or the SQL Server Enterprise Manager and executed in order to either return a result or change database records. SQL can also be used to communicate with a database in conjunction with programming language or script language, such as Microsoft Visual Basic or PHP.
Although SQL is a world standard, it is regrettable that most database providers have developed different dialects and variations. This is because each database supplier wishes to distinguish its database products from the crowd. One good example is TRANSACT-SQL from Microsoft SQL Server. TRANSACT-SQL is a SQL superset and is for Microsoft SQL Server use only. While this simplifies software developers' programming, it does not comply with Oracle or MySQL, which makes TRANSACT-SQL programs unportable to the database. Thus, although many of these features are powerful and robust, it is good practice to take care and limit the use of SQL to conform to ANSI/ISO SQL and ODBC-Compliant standards.
For IT professionals interested in knowing how to work on the product, Microsoft SQL training is important. Microsoft's SQL server history is also very important. Basically, the code for MS SQL came from the first Microsoft database to try Sybase SQL Server. It ran against Sybase, IBM and Oracle. Sybase, Microsoft, and Ashton-Tate then collaborated to create the first SQL Server version. It was almost the same as the third edition of the Sybase SQL Server. The Microsoft SQL Server 4.2 was then released in 1992. The 4.21 version was available simultaneously with Windows NT 3.1. The first SQL version without Sybase aid was the Microsoft SQL Server v6.0.
